Before a design becomes a hoodie or a tee, it starts as ink wash brushwork, drawing on West African mask carving traditions and Akan mythology. Here is where some of that comes from.
The Akan Warrior
The Akan people of West Africa, primarily in present day Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, have a long tradition of ceremonial masks and regalia used in ritual and storytelling: gold ornamentation, carved wood, symbolic armor. The Akan Warrior Hoodie and Sweatshirt draw on that visual language, a figure in gold ceremonial armor, face behind a ritual mask, rendered in the same ink wash style as everything else in the collection. Anansi, the Trickster
Anansi is one of the most enduring figures in West African and Akan folklore, a spider who outwits gods, kings, and stronger animals not through strength, but through wit. Stories of Anansi traveled with the African diaspora and took root across the Caribbean and the Americas, changing shape but keeping the same core: the smallest player in the room can still win.
